SS 5.6 Korean War/Vietnam/Cold War Era:
Understands the social and economic impact of the Korean, Vietnam and Cold War. (i.e. economic factors, social issues, events, key people, places, technology
This scenario will focus on the Cold War Era, this scenario can be played a few different ways, I’ll have two different scenarios in this post and I’ll be adding more later on. The reason for this is that the Cold War spans a large period of time with a very complex background. Standard wise we’ll be covering Chugach SS5.6 “Understand the social and economic impact of the Korean, Vietnam and Cold War.”
The Cold War sprung forth from the ashes of WWII, during the next two years after 1945 the Soviet Union and United States began consolidating their governmental beliefs of Capitalism and Communism. For example the US would support anti-communism in the Korean, Vietnam and many other wars that broke out to keep the Soviet Union contained. By supporting the countries at war to help remove soviet union control.
This leads us to the Korean War in which the US supported by the NATO (unification of non communist countries), leads major support and aid to the communist opposing forces of South Korea. North Korea supported by the communist soviet Union and China engage in open warfare on june 25 1950. NATO then rushed with mostly American forces to support South Korea against North Korea. The war ended with the retreat of South Korea and it supporting allies, nearly 88% of the troops were American. The was a major loss and humiliation for one of greatest superpowers.
The Vietnam War started 5 years later on november 1st 1955 to 30th april 1975. The war was fought between North Vietnam supported by China, Soviet Union and other communist allies. Where as the government of Vietnam was supported by the US and other anti-communist allies. The communist supported rebels used guerilla tactics to outmaneuver the US inforced government. In response the US began carpet bombing with the usage of chemical warfare, in an attempt to remove the foliage and burn out of the rebels. Direct US military involvement ended in 1973 and the war was over on 1975 with the fall of Saigon.
These war were considered proxy wars for the overarching Cold War. The Cold war lasted until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Across the Soviet Union previously acquired nations began to revolt, wanting independence from Soviet Union rule. Eventually leading to the downfall of the communist party within the Soviet Union, this led to the eventual downfall of the Soviet Union.
