Alaska History.

This post will cover the western settling of Alaska. As with my previous RPG scenarios, which you can find here. I’ll give a synopsis of the history of alaska from Russian colonization to present day. This will cover Chugach standards 6.3-6.7; the history of Alaska from native settling to present. This includes Native settlers, Russian colonization, the US purchase and then the development of Alaska by the US.

Alaska was first settled by Native settlers that traveled across the Bering Land Bridge. Arriving thousands of years before the earliest of western settlers, roughly fifteen thousand years before. These settlers were known as Amerid migration group, they continued south and settled across the Americas becoming known as the American Indians.

The next set of migrations to the Americas began around 12000 BP, settling in modern day Alaska and Canada. These indigenous people became known as the Yup'ik, Athabaskan, Tlingit, Aleut, and Inupiat. Western and Southwestern Alaska being  home to the Yup’ik, the Interior is home to the Athabaskan, Southeast Alaska is home to the Tlingit, Aleutians are home to the Aleut and the north slope is inhabited by the Inupiat. The most recent records of permanent inhabited settlements, in the far north, are between 3,500 - 4000 years ago.

The Russians was the first European power to discover Alaska first and were the first to claim Alaska in 1648. The Alaskan colony was established to specifically hunt the sea otter for their pelts. As time went by the Russians with the (forced) help of the Aleut, who they had brutally subjugated, hunted Sea Otters to near extinction. This put Russia in a bad position economically with it’s north american colonies. Fearing loss of their oversea colonies to the British empire without compensation. Russia then sold Alaska in 1867 to the US for 7.2 million, 2 cents per acre. The US also not seeing much use in Alaska was greatly unsatisfied, calling it “Sewards Folly’ after the man who spearheaded the purchase. However, doubts were quickly dismissed when George Kormake officially discovered gold on August 19th 1896 in the Klondike River.  Igniting the second American gold rush. Settlers from all over the US headed “North to Alaska!” attempting to find great fortune.
AlaskaMap.ashx
Due to the gold rush thousands of people flocked to Alaska colonizing and finalizing it as a territory of the US. Officially incorporating it into a territory in 1912. Three decades later during World War II south Alaska became a large base of operations for US forces. Reclaiming portions of the southern Aleutian islands from the Japanese. After the war Alaska obtained statehood in 1948. The result of hard fought campaign by Alaskans in the US congress.

Oil was formally “discovered” on the north slope of Alaska by the Atlantic-Richfield Company in 1968. As a reaction to the 1973 oil crisis, the Trans-Alaskan pipeline was built between 1974 and 1976 to transport it to market and boost US energy independence. This strained the already tense land-right situation occurring between local indigenous groups, the state and federal government. This land-right issue was settled with the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), signed in 1971 by president Richard M. Nixon. This act was intended to solve these issues by transferring land claims by indigenous groups in exchange for the creation of 13 Native owned regional corporations and numerous local corporations. This was a difficult task to make both parties equally happy and is still being fought over today. In any case this meant that the Atlantic-Richfield Company was able to buy the rights to drill for oil on the north slope, along with the construction of the pipeline.

Giving Alaska a major resource export that has continued to supply the state with money to this day. In fact the oil fields were so massive that they managed to provide 20% of the nation's domestic oil output at the height of oil production.

In RPing terms, you (GM) can choose any part of Alaska’s history to RP on. However, because the history of Alaska is so large, I won’t be able to cover it all with just one RP scenario. So instead I’ll create an example scenario, but don’t feel like you can only play that one. It also could be that you want to do an RP series starting at the beginning of known Alaska history. Anyway the goal of this RP is to complete the klondike trail and find your fortune. This will require traveling over the klondike trail, going down the river and surviving the harsh climate of the north. The players will play as miners and settlers while the GM will help guide the players by filling in as NPC (non-player characters).

The Civil Movement.

This RP will focus on the Civil Rights movement, beginning in 1954 and achieving the height of it influence in 1968. We’ll be covering chugach standard SS 7.1, “Understanding the social impact of the Civil Rights Movement.” If this is the first post you have read that uses RPG forums, you can check out my guide on RPGing and other related posts, here.
The Civil Rights movement was a reaction against institutionalized racism in the United States. Institutionalized racism in society wasn’t minor, and often led to violent acts perpetrated against blacks, more often, it came down to segregation of schools, denying jobs, denying services and denying positions of power. To end this inequality, the civil rights movement’s ultimate goal was to end both institutional and violent  racism in the US through non-violent protests and acts of civil defiance.

The racial equality laws passed after the civil war gave African-American’s their freedom, outlawed slavery, and gave male African-Americans the right to vote. This caused an uproar with democratic whites and quickly the Ku Klux Klan emerged attempting to suppress African-American and white supporters through violence and intimidation. The white supremacists controlled the democratic party and also dominated the south, which allowed them to resist the republican support for the African-American community. This lead to racial segregation, violence against non-white communities, disenfranchisement (removal of blacks from any position of economic or political power), and general exploitation of African-American communities.

The African-American community used boycotts and sit-in as “weapons” to peacefully demonstrate the oppression and segregation of their community. Through the efforts and collaboration of major African-American leaders (Martin Luther King, Jr, and Rosa Parks are just a few of the notables) they managed to gain African-American voting rights, non-segregated education and proper economical, and political status. These were passed into law under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and the 1968 Fair Housing Act.

Rosa Parks was considered to be the mother of the Civil Rights movement. Her initial fame came in 1955 when she refused to move to the colored section of a bus for a white man. She was then arrested, but never sent to jail. She became a figurehead for the civil rights movement and fired the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott into high gear. Martin Luther King, jr became the leader and speaker for the bus boycott, he then led an unsuccessful protest against the segregation in Albany, Georgia in 1962. Later that year he organized the nonviolent protest in Birmingham, Alabama which attracted the attention of the government when the brutal police response was filmed live on national TV. The next year he helped organize the 1963 March on Washington while delivering his famous  "I Have a Dream" speech. On April 4th 1968 he was assassinated, becoming a martyr for the greater cause leading to the passing the civil right acts.
The goal of this RP Is to play through the larger picture of events during the Civil Rights movement. From the start of the movement, 1954 to 1968. Players roles will have to be split up for each side of the movement, those being the African-American supporters and those that attempted to suppress them. Being a complicated and conflicted topic the teachers role will be a mediator to maintain a RP of education and not an argument.

The Cold War

SS 5.6 Korean War/Vietnam/Cold War Era:
Understands the social and economic impact of the Korean, Vietnam and Cold War. (i.e. economic factors, social issues, events, key people, places, technology

This scenario will focus on the Cold War Era, this scenario can be played a few different ways, I’ll have two different scenarios in this post and I’ll be adding more later on. The reason for this is that the Cold War spans a large period of time with a very complex background. Standard wise we’ll be covering Chugach SS5.6 “Understand the social and economic impact of the Korean, Vietnam and Cold War.”

The Cold War sprung forth from the ashes of WWII, during the next two years after 1945 the Soviet Union and United States began consolidating their governmental beliefs of Capitalism and Communism. For example the US would support anti-communism in the Korean, Vietnam and many other wars that broke out to keep the Soviet Union contained. By supporting the countries at war to help remove soviet union control.

4604988144_0f70432d52.jpg

This leads us to the Korean War in which the US supported by the NATO (unification of non communist countries), leads major support and aid to the communist opposing forces of South Korea. North Korea supported by the communist soviet Union and China engage in open warfare on june 25 1950. NATO then rushed with mostly American forces to support South Korea against North Korea. The war ended with the retreat of South Korea and it supporting allies, nearly 88% of the troops were American. The was a major loss and humiliation for one of greatest superpowers.

The Vietnam War started 5 years later on november 1st 1955 to 30th april 1975. The war was fought between North Vietnam supported by China, Soviet Union and other communist allies. Where as the government of Vietnam was supported by the US and other anti-communist allies. The communist supported rebels used guerilla tactics to outmaneuver the US inforced government. In response the US began carpet bombing with the usage of chemical warfare, in an attempt to remove the foliage and burn out of the rebels. Direct US military involvement ended in 1973 and the war was over on 1975 with the fall of Saigon.

These war were considered proxy wars for the overarching Cold War. The Cold war lasted until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Across the Soviet Union previously acquired nations began to revolt, wanting independence from Soviet Union rule. Eventually leading to the downfall of the communist party within the Soviet Union, this led to the eventual downfall of the Soviet Union.

The goal of this RP is to play as the countries involved in the war, you can find them in my resources section. Basically, the player will choose one of the involved countries and internal departments of said countries. Refer below for a more specific list

Player:
  • Country, players can roleplay as the leader of a country
    • Must have american and Soviet Union Leaders
  • Departments within countries:
    • Players cand RP as characters of governmental departments, so intelligence agencies, Generals, Economic advisors etc.
teacher:
  • Teacher will fill any important roles left to keep the story moving, so for example if no one players as the leader of the Soviet Union the teacher can play as the leader to keep the rp moving.

World War 2

This will be part two of my World at War scenarios, we’ll be covering World War II in both the pacific and European theaters. The RPing mindset will be the same as the last one, meaning that we’ll focus on the emotional aspect of war. If you haven’t seen my WWI RP check it out here, and the guide to RPG Forums here.

We’ll be covering Chugach standard SS 5.1 to understand the key elements of WWII, major events, Key people, place, and technology. To cover we’ll be RPing as a company in the European theater and as a ship crew in the pacific theater.

World War II started officially in 1939, however, Japan had already initiated plans to dominate the pacific theater and Asia. They were already at war with China in 1937, the official World War however, started in 1939 with the invasion of Poland by Germany. Then the subsequent war declarations by the United Kingdoms and France. By 1941 Germany had conquered most of European territories through campaigns and treaties. The United Kingdom and British Commonwealth were the only surviving countries fighting against Germany.

In June of 1941 Germany forming allies with Japan to form the Axis launched its invasion of soviet Russia turning the European theater into the largest land war ever, turning the theatre into a war of attrition. In December of 1941 Japan attacked United States and European Territories and quickly conquered much of it.

The advance of the Axis forces halted when Japan lost the battle at Midway against the US, Germany was then defeated in Africa and then decisively defeated in Stalingrad by the Russians. The Axis losing initiative began strategically retreating, Russia began its invasion into Germany, and the US crippled Japanese naval forces and captured strategic points.

33_World_War_II_in_Europe.gif

The war ended with the invasion of Germany by the western Allies in the beginning months of 1945. 73 division were led by Dwight D. Eisenhower into Germany. 49 infantry, 20 armor, 4 Airborne divisions. 49 were American, 12 British, 7 french, 3 Canadian and one Polish. This is where the RP will start. The players will create characters as one of the divisions, either infantry or armor. To successfully RP I recommend reading up on real life divisions, watching Fury or Band of Brothers. These two movies I feel give a great example of the emotional development of war borne characters.

For resources check here:
player:
The teachers role for this will be to issue orders and missions for the characters to preform.

Since the war was fought on two fronts the European theater and the Pacific theater. The above resources are for the European while the below are for the Pacific theater.

For resources:
Player:

pacific_theater_areas.jpg

Players of this Rp will play both the pacific and European theater with two different characters respectively. They’ll be playing as navy officers on a naval ship that pushes back against the Japanese threats.

Teachers your role will the same as in the European theater.
